Tea

An observational poem on tea, sugar, and a spoon.

Steeping a tea bag in hot water
The dark brown leisurely disperses
Much like petals of a flower uncurling
In a cup of possibilities.

A brown sugar cube arrives.
The water ripples for a few moments.
When the surface is calm again
The cube, now sunken
Has spread its own shade of brown.

The two shades
Some parts distinct, some parts merged
Diffusing slowly
In their own race to reach the edge
Of what defines possibility.

Alas
Before the victory is announced
A spoon dips in
Creating a swirling pool of chaos
Blending every shade of brown
Into one uniformity.

Neither has won the race.
Neither has lost.

The fun ends
When it has barely begun.

I tried to photograph the tea diffusing, but my trusty mug cannot beat a teacup for capturing the diffusion.

Perhaps the next time you are having a nice cuppa, take a moment to observe the race before the spoon does its work.
